Salem Scholars is a way to take part in a club with students who have done at least 2 hours of community service and excel in their studies with a 3.7 GPA or better. These students strive to give back to the community as much as possible and to offer the world their great leadership.

Did I mention these are only 10th graders? Yes, they are! 10th graders were inducted in the beginning of the school year, and are continuing to plan for this great year. That means Salem Scholars can offer a great basis into getting into the National Honor Society your Junior year. It will also look amazing on a college application. So, be attentive in class, earn the best grade that you can, be successful, and join Salem Scholars for your sophomore year! Look for applications in March.

Scholastic Bowl:  Ms. Sturgis
The Scholastic Bowl season begins at the beginning of the school year, with practices twice a week during the first quarter.  The season, one match against each of the other Beach high schools, runs during the second quarter.  At the end of the regular season, the top eight teams in the standings compete in the Beach District Tournament.  The regular season winner and tournament winner go on to the Regional tournament , which leads to a state championship in this VHSL competition.  If the team members choose to do so, the team will also attempt to qualify for the Battle of the Brains TV program on WAVY-TV.  We have been on the air each of the past two years, winning one and losing one each year.  When the 07-08 school years begins, Ms. Sturgis will be looking for students at all grade levels who enjoy a Jeopardy-like team competition.  It is an excellent way to keep sharp in all areas covered in courses, as well as general knowledge, trivia, current events, and sports.  Students should also realize that this is an extracurricular activity that colleges are quite impressed with when they see it on a student's application.  It is something that separates the participants from the pack of other high GPAs and SAT scores.  It's a valuable and a fun activity.

The mission of the Technology Student Association TSA (www.tsaweb.org) is to prepare its membership for the challenges of a dynamic world by promoting technological literacy, leadership, and problem solving skills, resulting in personal growth and opportunities.

TSA members represent students with many interests and talents. Our competitive events are wide ranging because the scope of technology is ever expanding. There is not an employer today that does not seek the most technologically literate employees who have the leadership and organizational skills of a TSA member.

If you like being around people and like working with innovations in technology, technology education is an outstanding career choice. Students in TSA make excellent technology teacher candidates because they:

• have already learned about the role of technology in our world

• are leaders and hands-on problem solvers, and

• they work as team members

Salem TSA is exploring Robotics this year. We are assembling simple robots and learning BASIC programming to use with a more advanced Robot which the Tech Ed Department received recently.
